Straßegg (Straßeck), Gasen, Birkfeld, Steiermark, Österreich
Ancient arsenic and gold mining area, located north and northeast of Straßegg pass (1163 m asl), covering an area about 1.2 km long and several hundred meters wide.
Note on the mineral list: Bojar (1999) also mentions two unidentified Cd sulphides (a Cd-Ag-Sb-sulphide and a Pb-Sb-Cd-Ag-sulphide). Measured wt.% values for these phases are given in Bojar et al. (1998).
Note on the gold of Straßegg: Around 1985 came many micromount- to thumbnail-sized quartz specimens with pyrite/limonite and gold on the market, typically marked with small red markers! This gold is NOT from the arsenic mine. The finder never told the correct locality and died with his knowledge. Best is to label those specimens as "Unknown locality next to Birkfeld".
