The Salton Sea is a 376 square mile (970 km²) saline, endorheic rift lake located directly on the San Andreas Fault N of the Mexican border.

The lake occupies the lowest elevations of the Salton Sink in the Colorado Desert of Imperial and Riverside Counties in Southern California.

Currently, its surface is 226 ft (ca. 69 m) below sea level. It is fed by the New, Whitewater, and Alamo rivers.
