Mineralization is sulphide and sulfosalt deposition in geothermal well discharge pipes.
The sedimentary units within the Salton Sea geothermal field have been heated from depth due to prolonged rifting in the trough and associated silica-rich magmatism. This heating yields hot, advecting brine and progressive metamorphic grade rocks. For example, in the State 2-14 drill core, these metamorphic grades include a chlorite-calcite zone from ~610- to 2,480-m depth (corresponding to ~180°–325°C), a biotite zone from ~2,480- to 3,000-m depth (corresponding to ~325°–350°C), and a clinopyroxene zone from ~3,000- to 3,180-m depth (corresponding to temperatures >~350°C), where the names of each zone correspond to the first appearance of the characteristic minerals for that grade.
