A lead-zinc-silver mine opened in 1906. Closure about 1989. Produced about a quarter-million tons of ore per year.

Although the mine is closed, metals are still extracted from old tailings (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kabwe, accessed 14 July 2021). In total, 1.8 Mt of Zn and 0.8 Mt Pb, plus 79 t Ag, 7820 t V2O5, 235 t Cd and 64 t Cu were extracted from the Kabwe mine during its lifespan, leaving 1.9 Mt of Zn-silicate resources, at 13.4 wt.% Zn and 1.5 wt.% Pb, still in situ.

The stratabound Zn-Pb ore comprises massive, breccia and replacement sulphides within carbonate rocks marking the transition from Lower Roan to Upper Roan.

Located 1 km southwest of the town centre. Known to be one of the 10 worst polluted places in the world due mostly to heavy metal tailings entering the water supply.
