The Mendip Hills National Landscape is a distinctive limestone upland in Somerset, rising sharply from the surrounding lowlands to form a dramatic plateau of hills, gorges, and open downland. Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1972 and renamed a National Landscape in 2023, the Mendip Hills are valued for their bold landforms, extensive caves, rich wildlife, and long record of human occupation. The landscape includes sweeping views, wooded combes, steep-sided valleys such as Cheddar Gorge, and a strong rural character shaped by farming, quarrying, and settlement over thousands of years.
Geologically, the Mendip Hills are among the most important limestone landscapes in Britain. They are dominated by Carboniferous Limestone laid down in warm tropical seas around 350 million years ago, later uplifted and folded to form the present-day plateau. This soluble limestone has been extensively shaped by karst processes, giving rise to Britain’s most extensive cave systems, underground rivers, sinkholes, and gorges. The Mendips also have a long and significant mining heritage: from prehistoric times through the Roman period and into the 19th century, the area was an important centre for the extraction of lead, zinc and other commodities. Evidence of this activity survives in the form of shallow workings, spoil heaps, and mining landscapes scattered across the hills.
