Gloucestershire is a ceremonial and historic county in south-west England, United Kingdom, bordered by Worcestershire and Warwickshire to the north, Oxfordshire to the east, Wiltshire to the south, Somerset to the south-west, and Herefordshire and Monmouthshire to the west, with the River Severn forming a major geographical feature. The county covers an area of approximately 3,150 km² and contains a diverse landscape of lowland valleys, limestone escarpments, and forested hills. Major towns include Gloucester (the county city), Cheltenham, Stroud, and Cirencester.
Geologically, Gloucestershire spans several major geological provinces of southern Britain. The eastern part of the county is dominated by the Cotswolds, formed of gently dipping Jurassic limestones that create a classic escarpment and plateau landscape. Elsewhere in the county, quarrying of Jurassic limestone from the Cotswolds has been widespread and long-lasting, supplying building stone used across southern England.
