Troncea Valley constitutes the head of the Chisone river basin and is entirely located in the municipal territory of Pragelato. Most of the valley is within the territory of Val Troncea Natural Park.
The main lithofacies of the valley consists of phyllitic calcschists with intercalations of micaceous marbles and graphitic schists. Meter to kilometer-sized blocks of mafic and/or ultra-mafic rocks of ophiolitic affinity (metagabbros, glaucophanites, greenschist-facies metabasites, and serpentinites) are scattered within these pelagic metasedimentary rocks. Large bodies of metagabbros crop out at Colle Clapis and on the south-western slope of Bric di Mezzogiorno (also known as Punta del Beth). Serpentinites are abundant only at Bric del Cucuc. A Permo-Werfenian sequence (consisting of muscovite mica schists, albite-chlorite gneisses, and whitish quarzites) overlaid by Jurassic limestones and Triassic dolostones with intercalations of bituminous and carbonaceous schists crops out on the left side of the valley at the base Punta Rognosa and Monte Banchetta.
