The Shire of Kondinin is 300 kilometres east of Perth, covers 7 376 square kilometres, and has a population of 1002 people (2011). Its forms a narrow west-east band, with the western portion in the eastern wheatbelt, and the eastern portion dry heathland and salmon gum woodland.
There are two towns in the shire-Kondinin and Hyden. The economy is based on cereal growing/sheep, mining and tourism. Attractions are mainly centred on Hyden. Here is found Wave Rock. On the edge of a granite monolith, water has sculpted a perfectly formed wave. Its picture is plastered across every promotional booklet for the region.
Just beyond the agricultural area, is the Forrestania Belt, a north-south trending series of nickel and the occasional gold mine. No specimens have been seen for the shire in private collections.
