An underground nickel mine owned by Outokumpu Oy and operated from 1992 to 1999. Produced 2.5 million tons/yr @ 2.82% Ni (1990). Now owned by Western Areas NL.

Located 84 km east of Hyden.

Cosmic Boy is one of several mines held by Western Areas NL (2012) in the Forrestania Region, 90 kilometres east of Hyden. Other nearby mines operated by the company are Flying Fox, Spotted Quoll, Diggers South and New Morning. Cosmic Boy holds the accommodation village and nickel concentrating plant for these mines.

Mineralisation is contained in the central one-third of the strike, as disseminated Ni sulphides in the basal zone, thin lenses and veins of matrix and massive sulphides central, and patchy disseminated sulphides in the upper zone.

The sequence consists of metabasalt, tremolite-chlorite-olivinite 100 metres thick;, banded iron formation, quartz-magnetite-grunerite, some pyrrhotite or pyrite rich layers 40-50 metres thick; biotite, feldspathic quartzose, quartzite, layered amphibolite, ferruginous Mg-Ca carbonates, diopside 100-130 metres thick; partly serpentinized olivine, and calc carbonate chlorite, anthophyllite, tremolite 0-50 metres thick; mafic metasedimentary and banded iron formation 60-90 metres thick, metadunite 15-25 metres thick; mafic metasedimentary and banded iron formation again 30-50 metres thick; olivine with sub-ordinate talc, serpentine, chlorite, bravoite, patchy anthophyllite, basal disseminated Ni sulphides 15-60 metres thick; banded iron formation, quartz-magnetite-grunerite-hornblende 40 metres thick; millerite, pyrite, magnetite, pyrrhotite and pentlandite in the basal zone.
