It is the southwesternmost province of Lombardy and is crossed by the rivers Ticino and Po, which meet four kilometres south of the capital, Pavia. These rivers divide the province into three parts: Lomellina, enterely located in the Po Plain to the north of the Po and to the west of the Ticino; Pavese, enterely located in the Po Plain to the north of the Po and to the east of the Ticino; Oltrepò, located to the south of the Po and consisting of a relatively small area of plain and large area of hilly and mountainous lands (Ligurian Apennines). The Province of Pavia was founded in 1859, even before the Unification of Italy in 1861, after the annexation of Lombardy to the Kingdom of Sardinia, by merging Pavese (formerly part of the Austrian Empire) with Lomellina and Oltrepò. In the period 1923-1925 from the province were detached 12 Oltrepò municipalities: 7 of them (Bobbio, Caminata, Cerignale, Corte Brugnatella, Ottone, Romagnese, and Trebecco) joined the Province of Piacenza, the others (Fascia, Fontanigorda, Gorreto, Rondanina, and Rovegno) joined the Province of Genova.
Oltrepò, the triangular territory to the south of River Po between Staffora stream to the west and Tidone stream to the east, is characterised by complex structural relationships among discontinuous remnants of ophiolite-bearing chaotic units of Late Cretaceous age (Western External Ligurian Succession), the Jurassic Ligurian-Piedmont oceanic basin, and the overlaying episutural and wedge-top basins (i.e. Tertiary Piedmont Basin and Epiligurian Units, respectively).
