The Valdinizza meteorite was seen to fall after detonations on July 12, 1903, at about 10:00 a.m., west of the village of Sant'Albano, Val di Nizza. Meli (1906 and 1908) described the circumstances of the recovery of two stones: one weighed 131.55 g, the other 872.44 g. The largest portion of the smaller individual is preserved at the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale, Milan, Italy; the larger individual was purchased by S.H. Perry from R. Palumbo in Rome in 1947 and is preserved at the United States National Museum, Washington, D.C.
This meteorite, classified by Hey (1966) as an intermediate olivine-hypersthene chondrite and by van Schums & Wood (1967) as a L6 chondrite, mostly consists of silicates, i.e. ferroan forsterite (Fa25), ferroan enstatite (Fs23), plagioclase (An10), and maskelynite. The grains of opaque components are made of troilite, kamacite, taenite, chromite, and ilmenite. Its structure shows evidence of a period of high-temperature recrystallisation; interesting features of schock-metamorphism are notable, the microtexture deformations suggesting a high level of stress.
