The Trnava Region (Trnavský kraj) is an administrative region in western Slovakia, covering approximately 4,150 km². It is bordered by the Czech Republic and Austria to the west, Hungary to the south, and the Slovak regions of Bratislava, Trenčín, and Nitra to the north and east. The region is largely lowland in character and includes much of the Danubian Lowland (Podunajská nížina), one of Slovakia’s most fertile agricultural areas. Major rivers include the Danube, which forms the southern boundary, as well as the Váh, Dudváh, and Morava rivers, which have strongly influenced settlement, transport, and land use.

Geologically, the Trnava Region is dominated by Cenozoic sedimentary deposits associated with the Pannonian Basin. These consist mainly of unconsolidated to weakly consolidated sands, gravels, clays, silts, and loess, deposited in fluvial, lacustrine, and alluvial environments. These sediments mantle older basement rocks at depth and form extensive flat plains with rich soils. In the north and north-west of the region, the landscape rises gently into the Little Carpathians (Malé Karpaty), where older Palaeozoic and Mesozoic rocks—including limestones, dolomites, sandstones, and crystalline basement—are locally exposed and structurally deformed during the Alpine orogeny.

The region’s mineral and extractive heritage reflects this geological setting. Extraction has focused mainly on sand, gravel, clay, and loess-derived materials used for construction, brickmaking, and ceramics, particularly within the lowlands and river terraces. Limestone and dolomite have been quarried in the Little Carpathians for building stone, lime, and cement. While Trnava Region has not been a major centre of metallic mining, its non-metallic mineral resources have played an important role in regional development and infrastructure.

Administratively, the Trnava Region is divided into seven districts: Trnava, Piešťany, Hlohovec, Senica, Skalica, Galanta, and Dunajská Streda, with Trnava as the regional capital. The region has a strong cultural identity shaped by its agricultural traditions, historic towns, and position at the crossroads of Central Europe. Its landscape and economy reflect the close relationship between fertile basin geology, river systems, and long-standing human settlement in western Slovakia.
