Genplesite is named in honour of Gennadiy N. Plesin (b. 1963), a mine surveyor at the Oktyabr'sky mine and an amateur mineralogist who found the mineral.
The Sn analogue of despujolsite and schaurteite. Also the Ca-Sn analogue of fleischerite.
Currently the only natural tin sulfate known. One of a few non-silicate oxysalts of tin, the other being tin-rich borates mengxianminite, nordenskiöldine, and tusionite.
