The mineral is named after Carmelo Giacovazzo (born at Locorotondo, Bari, Italy, on December 14, 1940) for his outstanding contribution to crystallography.
Known synthetic analogue (beta-Maus's Salt). Chemically especially related to scordariite - second currently known K-Fe oxysulfate mineral.
