Grube Breitenau (Tagebau Breitenau; Magnesitbergbau Breitenau; Magnesitlagerstätte Breitenau), Breitenau am Hochlantsch, Bezirk Bruck-Mürzzuschlag, Steiermark, Österreich
Strata-bound and time-bound sparry magnesite deposit in the Graz Paleozoic (Tufar et al. 2008). It is embedded within a black shale facies occurring within an Upper Silurian (clastic silicate) rock series, which is characterized by a pronounced deficiency in carbonate sediments. The magnesite deposit was overprinted by diagenetic and post-diagenetic processes.
The deposit, which is known since around 1850, was exploited first in 1903. It is still worked (by open-pit and underground works) and, with an annual production of 470,000 tons, the most productive in Austria. In the past, the deposit was also worked for iron ores, mostly limonite.
Owned by RHI Magnesita.
Located south of St. Jakob-Breitenau, in the southwestern Fischbacher Alpen mountains.
