A red-bed deposit of Cu, V, Co, Ni, U, that has weathered in proximity to salt water.

A cliff-line exposure cutting through Permian age red marl deposits overlain to the east by the Budleigh Salterton Pebble Beds and bounded to the west by a normal strike fault.

The red-bed deposits contain abundant Cu, V, Co, Ni, U etc. and are noted for hard, concretionary nodules representing centres of enrichment for these metals. A number of the observed mineral species arise as a result of weathering in the presence of salt water.

This exposure falls partially within a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) covering the Eastern part of the cliff-line, and collecting is thus restricted.

A by-law prohibits the collecting and removal of beach material.
There is unrestricted public access from the main beach.
