The current territory of this province is comprised of the area between the River Sesia to the west and the River Ticino to the east. However, there are no definite geographic limits to the north and to the south and its boundaries with the provinces of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola and Pavia, respectively, follow those of the municipal territories.

The province was created in 1859 and its territory included all of northeastern Piedmont. From its large territory, the province of Vercelli was detached in 1927 and the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola in 1992.

Therefore, a large number of mineral localities, which the old literature and mineral labels indicate in Novara province, are no longer located in its territory. In particular, since 1992 the world-famous localities of Baveno, Candoglia, Vigezzo Valley, Mount Cervandone, etc. belong to the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola.
