Lake Superior is the largest of the five Great Lakes of North America. The lake is approximately 350 miles (ca. 563 km) long and 160 miles (ca. 257 km) wide at its widest point. Its surface area is 31,700 square miles (ca. 82,102 km²) and the shoreline measures 2,726 miles (ca. 4,387 km) long. Lake Superior has a maximum depth of 1,333 feet (ca. 406 m) and an average depth of over 400 feet (ca. 122 m). The Lake occupies the depression formed by the Midcontinent Rift ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midcontinent_Rift_System ) approximately 1.1 billion years ago and glacially carved during the last glacial maximum around 10,000 years ago.
