The Pittsburgh and Isle Royale Mining Company incorporated in 1846 opened the Haytown Mine, the second mine to begin work on Isle Royale, in 1847. The mine site was chosen because of a fifteen foot wide amygdaloidal vein that crossed the property and showed early promise. By 1849, additional exploration of the property discovered more veins about a mile from the shoreline. In 1850, the company had driven two shafts and an adit at their Todd Harbor location. The copper at this location was found as sheets and stamp ore. In 1850, the mine shipped around 4,500 pounds of copper that yielded 75 percent pure copper. Several mass pieces of copper were recovered, included one that weighed 700 pounds. The mine began losing money and shut down in 1853 due to its remote location.
