The Åtvidaberg Copper Mines are located approx. 40 km SE of Linköping and consist of two major ore fields; the Mormorsgruvan, 1.5 x 4.5 km in size, and the Bersbo field which is roughly 9 square km size.
Mining might have started as early as the 13th century but the oldest proof is from the letters patent in 1413 by the King Erik. Mining flourished until 1610 when it decreased due to the many wars. Mining more or less resumed in 1750 and in 1765 a company was formed with Baron Adelswärd as major shareholder. Copper production from 1765 until 1902 was about 35000 tons Cu.
Mining finally ceased in 1919.
