Semmering-Basistunnel (Semmeringbasistunnel), Gloggnitz, Bezirk Neunkirchen, Niederösterreich, Österreich
Railroad tunnel between Mürzzuschlag (Styria) and Gloggnitz (Lower Austria), under construction since 2012 and scheduled to be finished in 2027.
The material excavated on the (geologically different) Styrian side is dumped in a nearby small valley ('Deponie Longsgraben' and 'Deponie Fröschnitzgraben') while the material excavated on the Lower Austrian side was first used to fill up the abandoned Schlossberg quarry near Gloggnitz, and was later dumped in an abandoned gravel pit near Strasshof an der Nordbahn (near Vienna); GPS coordinates of gravel pit: 48.336952N, 16.661949E.
GPS coordinates given for locality are those of the tunnel portal at Gloggnitz.
There is one tunnel section (7 km) on the Lower Austrian side: „Tunnelabschnitt Gloggnitz“. It will end at the temporary construction site „Zwischenangriff Göstritz“ in the area of Schottwien (town in the district of Neunkirchen, Lower Austria).
During the ongoing construction of the tunnel, some interesting minerals were found (Kolitsch & Slama, 2016):
- Tabular synchysite-(Ce) in quartz veins
- Djurleite blebs in quartz (first find for lower Austria)
- Excellent yellowish, whitish or colourless crystals of donnayite-(Y) (first find for Austria), sprays of prismatic, colourless to white crystals of Ca-bearing strontianite, fluorite (greenish or violet) and several other minerals in a riebeckite gneiss ("Forellengneis") known to occur in lenses the Gloggnitz area. In December 2016 this gneiss was still dumped at Strasshof. Soon after only schists, and later graphite schists, were dumped.
Since around May/June 2020 anhydrite(-gypsum) rocks and variable amounts of other rocks (schists, limestones) were dumped (Kolitsch & Slama, 2021).
