Abandoned mine, that exploited a Cu-Pb-Zn sulphide deposit associated with hedenbergite-ilvaite skarn, located in Valle del Temperino (Fosso del Temperino).
The mine consists of various stopes and shafts: La Gran Cava, Pozzo Le Marchand, Galleria and Cava dell'Ortaccio (underground and open-pit works, respectively), Pozzo Earle (formerly Coquand), Pozzo Gowett, and Pozzo Fernet. La Gran Cava is a small open pit also known as “Cava Etrusca”, because it is thought to have been exploited already in Etruscan times.
Ilvaite crystals (up to 3 cm), associated with hyalin and milky crystals of quartz on a matrix of fibrous hedenbergite, have been typically found at Le Marchand stope. These specimens, as well as those from level 1-4 at the neighbour Lanzi mine, show strong analogies with some specimens from Dal'negorsk. At Le Marchand stope and Galleria dell'Ortaccio, from cavities without quartz inside the sulphide-bearing massive ilvaite skarn, large ilvaite crystals (up to 8 cm) grouped into aesthetic clusters and dotted with small pyrite crystals have been recovered. Large quartz crystals (up to 40-50 cm in length) were found inside the huge cavities evidenced at Le Marchand stope in the 1960s and 1970s. Large druses of quartz crystals coated with fibrous-radiating aggregates of thaumasite are known from level 3 at Pozzo Earle.
Temperino mine is one of the type localities for johannsenite (Schaller, 1938). The mineral appears as beige fibrous-radiating aggregates, mostly spheroidal in shape. Such aggregates often show various growth stages of different colour, separated by thin layers of galena and yellow-brown sphalerite.
Temperino mine is the type locality for campigliaite (Menchetti & Sabelli, 1982), described as tufts of pale blue tabular crystals, in association with gypsum, antlerite, and brochantite, from ilvaite skarn cavities found in a side gallery (the so-called "galleria del fornello") of level 3 at Pozzo Earle.
