A highly evolved, rare-element class, LCT-type granitic pegmatite of the spodumene-subtype category. The largest Li-Be-Nb-Ta-Cs pegmatite-hosted rare-metal deposit in the Chinese Altai orogenic belt. Worked for pollucite, spodumene, lepidolite, beryl, and columbite-tantalite.
The Koktokay No. 3 pegmatite intruded metagabbro. It shows a well-developed internal textural zonation, both in the thin but extensive subhorizontal bottom section and in the cupola. The cupola-shaped part is 250 × 250 × 250 m in length, width, and depth. From the outermost textural zone inward, nine mineralogical-textural zones can be distinguished: (1) graphic pegmatite zone; (2) sugary albite zone; (3) blocky microcline zone; (4) muscovite-quartz zone; (5) cleavelandite-spodumene zone; (6) quartz-spodumene zone; (7) platy albite-muscovite zone; (8) lepidolite-platy albite zone; (9) blocky quartz and microcline core.
In the Koktokay No. 3 pegmatite, Zones I–IV (the outer zones) constitute approximately 70% of the volume. However, the primary rare–metal mineralization is concentrated in Zones V–VIII (the inner zones).
The Aral granitic complex is mainly composed of dark grey and medium-coarse-grained BMG. The mineral assemblage of the Aral BMG consists of plagioclase (32 vol%), K-feldspar (28 vol%), quartz (30 vol%), and biotite (8 vol%); its accessory minerals are apatite, zircon, and Ti–Fe oxide.
The porphyric and fine-grained MAG occurs as small stocks, cupolas, and veins around the Aral BMG (biotite monzogranite). The Koktokay MAG (muscovite alkali-feldspar granite) is pale grey; its mineral assemblage consists of K-feldspar (30 vol%), albite (28 vol%), quartz (32 vol%), and muscovite (7 vol%); its accessory minerals are tourmaline, garnet, fluorite, and metal sulfides.
After ∼50 years of mining from 1950 to 1999, the Koktokay No. 3 pegmatite occurs as an open pit of ∼200 m deep.
