Sulphide-bearing quartz veins along the cleavages of an east-west trending and north dipping (30 degrees) ductile shear zone along the contact between Proterozoic amphibolites and underlying dolomitic marbles. Nearby, mesozoic granitic plutons have intruded into highly metamorphosed Proterozoic sedimentary-volcanic sequences.
The ore field occupies an area of about 11 x 9 km and contains numerous lead-zinc deposits with minor gold and silver ores, some of which have been mined since almost 400 years. Large independent silver and gold deposits were discovered in the 1990s.
The Qingchengzi orefield include Pb–Zn, Pb–Zn–Ag, and Au deposits, with estimated reserves of about 16 Mt of Pb and Zn, 4000 t of Ag, and 300 t of Au. The Pb–Zn and Pb–Zn–Ag deposits in Qingchengzi are traditionally classified into two types, i.e., strata-bound and fault-controlled deposits. The strata-bound Pb–Zn–Ag deposits generally have laminated or lenticular orebodies hosted by the banded graphite-bearing marble interbedded with mica schist of the Dashiqiao Formation in the east part of the orefield (e.g., Zhenzigou, Gaojiapuzi). The fault-controlled Pb–Zn deposits are strictly controlled by NE-trending faults, characterized by steep or dendritic orebodies cutting marble units, aside lamprophyre dykes or in fractured zones in the western part of the orefield (e.g., Xiquegou).
The QOF is located in the eastern part of the Liaodong Peninsula and represents the largest gold ore field (proven reserve: >300 t Au), surpassing Wulong and Maoling ore field. The stratigraphy of the QOF is primarily composed of the Archean Anshan Group, Paleoproterozoic Liaohe Group, Jurassic Xiaoling Formation and Quaternary. The Liaohe Group consist of the Langzishan, Lieryu, Gaojiayu, Dashiqiao and Gaixian formations. The QOF is mainly characterized by NE–NW trending faults, with gold occurrences predominantly aligned along these fault orientations. The intrusion rocks in the QOF are categorized into four epochs: Paleoproterozoic (represented by Dadingzi pluton), Triassic (represented by Shuangdinggou and Xinling plutons), Jurassic (represented by Yaojiagou and Waling plutons) and Early Cretaceous.
The Qingchengzi gold-dominated polymetallic district, situated in the North China Craton, has a mining history of over 400 years, with estimated reserves of 300 t Au and 4000 t Ag. The Qingchengzi orefield, located in the Liaodong segment of the Jiao-Liao-Ji Belt, is a major Au-Ag-Pb-Zn mineralization center with estimated reserves of ∼ 1.6 Mt Pb-Zn, 4000 t Ag, and 300 t Au. It contains over 20 gold deposits (including four to-large Au deposits: Baiyun, Linjiasandaogou, Xiaotongjiapuzi, Yangshu) and 10 medium-to-large Pb-Zn deposit, all hosted in the Paleoproterozoic Liaohe Group and genetically linked to these strata. For the orefield’s Au-Ag deposits, however, genesis remains controversial: early models proposed a “sedimentary deposition-metamorphism-hydrothermal overprinting” origin, while recent studies argue for Mesozoic hydrothermal or orogenic gold systems.
Some of these gold deposits extend to considerable depths within the fault system, reaching thicknesses of up to 133.6 m, with grades ranging from 0.1 to 0.5 g/t, occasionally peaking at 2.7 g/t in certain locations. Near the two prominent faults, QCZ has multiple gold deposits such as the Xiaotongjiabaozi, Linjiasandaogou, Baiyun, Yangshu, and Taoyuan. These deposits are primarily distributed across three northwest-trending mineralized belts: the Xiaotongjiabaozi, Baiyun, and Linjiasandaogou. Mineralization mainly manifests as altered rock types, with a minor occurrence of quartz veins. The formation of metal deposits in the QCZ mining area is closely related to rock masses and fault systems.
