About CrocobeloniteHide

Formula:
CaFe3+2O(PO4)2
Colour:
saffron red to pinkish red
Lustre:
Vitreous, Greasy
Hardness:
4
Specific Gravity:
3.555 (Calculated)
Crystal System:
Orthorhombic
Name:
From Greek κρόκος (saffron) and βελόνα 81 (needle), for the orange-red colour and prismatic to acicular habit of its crystals.
New structure type. Chemically similar to beershevaite, with further relation to yakubovichite and graftonite-(Ca). Another natural anhydrous Ca-Fe phosphate (but a pyrophosphate) is anastasenkoite.

Optical Data of CrocobeloniteHide

Type:
Biaxial (+)
RI values:
nα = 1.885(5) nβ = 1.885(5) nγ = 1.950
2V:
Measured: 10°
Max. Birefringence:
δ = 0.065
Based on recorded range of RI values above.

Interference Colours:
The colours simulate birefringence patterns seen in thin section under crossed polars. They do not take into account mineral colouration or opacity.

Michel-Levy Bar The default colours simulate the birefringence range for a 30 µm thin-section thickness. Adjust the slider to simulate a different thickness.

Grain Simulation You can rotate the grain simulation to show how this range might look as you rotated a sample under crossed polars. Each grain retains its interference colour (retardation) while its brightness falls to black at extinction and reaches a maximum between extinction positions.

Surface Relief:
Moderate
Pleochroism:
Strong
Comments:
Y – pale-yellow, Z – deep brownish-orange
Comments:
