A former open pit copper mine in the western United States, located in Butte, Montana. It is one mile (1.6 km) long by one-half mile (800 m) wide, with an approximate depth of 1,780 feet (ca. 543 m). It is filled to about 900 feet (ca. 274 m) with heavily acidic water (2.5 pH level), about the acidity of Coca-Cola, lemon juice, or gastric acid. As a result, the pit is laden with heavy metals and dangerous chemicals that leach from the rock, including copper, arsenic, cadmium, zinc, and sulphuric acid. Birds regularly die when they settle in the water for more than 4-6 hours.

Different from the original underground Berkeley Mine, which this pit absorbed.

The Berkeley Pit consumed these mines during its operation: Rarus Mine, Moonlight Mine (?), Berkeley Mine, Pennsylvania Mine, Anaconda Mine, South Shaft of The Anaconda Mine, Ramsdell, Parrot Mine, Mountain View Mine, Leonard Mine, Colusa Mine, Never Sweat Mine, East Colusa Mine, Tramway Mine, Dutton Mine, and the Silver Bow Mine.
