Quarrying area in so-called "Calancagranit": biotite gneiss intercalated with more massy, light-coloured two-mica gneiss and less frequently with calcsilicate lenses. Tectonically, the rocks belong to the upper Simano nappe.
Gneiss extraction at Antiglio, just above the Alla Sega locality to the south of Arvigo, was started in 1920 by Giovanni Polti. Quarrying was continued by his two sons, Alfredo and Lino, who owned two individual quarries known as the Alfredo and Lino quarries. Since 2013, quarrying has been carried out at Antiglio by the company Alfredo Polti SA. The official name of the quarry is now Cava Antiglio.
Among collectors, the quarrying area is famous for the large number of alpine fissure minerals. Most of the fissures are characterised by the assemblage of epidote, prehnite, and various zeolites. In general, epidote is overgrown by prehnite and zeolites, indicating that epidote is one of the primary minerals within late fissure mineralisation. Rare fissure minerals are babingtonite and vanadinite. Epitaxial overgrowths of hedenbergite on babingtonite have been observed. Fissure quartz crystals may contain fluid inclusions. Two generations of fluid inclusions are known: CO^2>-rich (35-70 vol.%) inclusions in the central part of the quartz crystals which homogenise above 310 °C and rather salt-poor water inclusions (gas bubbles and H^2O>) in the rims of the quartz crystals. These latter inclusions homogenise between 160 °C and 180 °C. Solid inclusions in the quartz rims are fibrous actinolite, chlorite, epidote, and occasionally calcite. These minerals are all characteristic of the epidote-prehnite-zeolites fissure group. Frequently, the quartz rim and core are separated by layers of fibrous actinolite. These observations suggest that 160-180 °C is the minimum temperature for the formation of the epidote-prehnite-zeolite assemblage.
Some other minerals, like chalcopyrite, grossular, hornblende, clinopyroxene, molybdenite, pyrrhotite, rutile, and scheelite, are found in calcsilicate lenses, quartz veins or ore veinlets.
Access and collecting had been strictly forbidden for safety reasons since 2007 when a large landslide happened in the Lino quarry (Cava Lino) (Weiß, 2007).
Restricted collecting is again possible since about 2011 on Sundays (Weiß & Praeger, 2011).
Swiss coordinates: 727´996 / 128´975.
