The Dannemora deposit comprises some 25 bodies of magnetite ore, over 3km in length and around 400 to 800 metres in width.

The iron mines also had minor zinc, copper and silver.
Earliest mention as being a silver mine is 1481.

The iron ore is of skarn iron type and hosted in metavolcanics rocks and sediments. The iron ore low in phosphorus and rich in lime and manganese was the base for the high quality steel from the famous Walloon works.

The 25 ore bodies comprise around 50 open-cast mines of which the largest, Storrymningen, is 200 m long and 100 m deep. Closed 1992. Reopened in June 2012 by the company Dannemora Mineral.
