A rural commune belonging to the Bafoulabé Cercle, Kayes Region of Mali.
Gem mining area. A rush in 1994-1995 produced large amounts of yellowish green or brown "Mali garnet". However, the market was saturated, leaving the mines abandoned. Many diggings within a 15 km radius of the town of Diako.
Diako is the preferred spelling, since it is found on the 1:250,000 topographic map sheet. Diakon is the spelling in government documents for the commune.

| ⓘ Clinochlore Formula: Mg5Al(AlSi3O10)(OH)8 Localities: Habit: Hexagonal rosettes. Flat faces tend to bear feathery growth striations. Colour: Various shades of green. Occasionally silvery, or stained orange-brown from iron oxides. Description: Enormous crystals for a species that’s so often either massive or microscopic in habit, often serving as a backdrop for the eye-catching andradite-grossular specimens the region is known for. Individual floater rosettes can reach ~8x5 cm, and are typically associated with dodecahedrons or crusts of magnetite. Despite their tendency to become bruised in transit, the rosettes still make for great examples of clinochlore’s growth habits and can exhibit good luster and translucency. |
