Cava La Facciata, Bacino estrattivo di Torano, Carrara, Provincia di Massa-Carrara (Provincia di Massa e Carrara), Toscana, Italia
Located on the right side of the Torano valley, on the orographic left of Canale di Torano. Whereas the easternmost levels of the quarying area (Fossa degli Angeli proper) are abandoned, the exploitation goes on in the middle levels at La Facciata quarry (also known as Quarry No. 40).
The quarrying area of Fossa degli Angeli-La Facciata is famous worldwide for its fine specimens of quartz, sulphur, fluorite, gypsum and several sulphides and sulphosalts. Minerals occur within the cavities of the so-called "macchia bianca", a decimeter-thick level of snow-white, coarse-grained marble.
At La Facciata, sulphur crystals up to 2-3 cm are typically found in association with quartz and gypsum. Larger crystals (up to 4 cm) usually show rounded edges and are not transparent.
