Albano Laziale, sometimes indicated simply as Albano, is a comune on the Alban Hills, in the so-called Castelli Romani (Roman Castles) area. The territory of Albano is partially included in the protected area of Regional Park of the Castelli Romani.

The phreatomagmatic Peperino Albano ignimbrite was largely quarried in the past to produce a dimension stone known as "lapis Albanus" or "peperino". Remnants of ancient quarries, dating back to the Severian period (end of the 2nd century-middle of the 3d century), are still observable on the territory of Albano at "I Tufetti", "Pietrara" and "I Cappuccini" localities.

Until the 1970s, mineral specimens were collected not only at I Tufetti, I Capuccini and Roccolo localities, but also along unpaved road and footpaths. Later, due to growing urbanisation and establishment of the protected area, a large part of the municipal territory became inaccessible to mineral collecting. The only possible sources of mineral specimens are now represented by excavations carried out for building and road construction, as in the case of the construction of the new Castelli Romani bypass road at the beginning of the 2000s.
