A project from the Soviet Union to attempt to drill as deep as possible into the Earth's crust. The deepest hole, SG-3, reached 12,262 meters in 1989, and remains the deepest artificial point on Earth.
The project was closed down in 2006 due to a lack of funding, and the site abandoned since 2008.
Native cobalt was found in amphibolite of the Kola ultra-deep borehole (SG-3) from a depth of 9630 m.
