Minerals are found in gneiss of Monte Leone nappe and associated amphibolites outcropping on the mountains surrounding the 5 km long (in 2012) glacier (Passo del Forno-Punte del Forno area, Cima Cust, Ofenjoch-Punta d'Arbola/Ofenhorn SE ridge, Torri del Vannino).

In 1976, from a cleft located about 30 m below the northwestermost summit of Punte del Forno, large quartz crystals and crystal aggregates of hematite ("iron roses"), sometimes attaining more than 3 cm in size, were recovered (Piccoli et al., 2007).
SEM-WDS analysis of heulandite-Ca has shown that Ca is the dominant extra-framework cation, accompanied by significant amounts of Sr and K, minor Na, and traces of Ba (Bosio & Lovskaya, 2007).
