Rock cuts in the vicinity of the current Interchange 10 were blasted for the redevelopment of the former Route 6A bypass into Interstate 84 circa 1960. Most minerals are present as lower temperature phases in small Alpine clefts in the gneiss, such as albite, anatase, apophyllite, calcite, chabazite-Ca (nice orange-yellow rhombs), chlorite, heulandite-Ca, laumontite, muscovite, natrolite, prehnite, pyrite (tiny cubes), rutile (reticulated needles) and, most abundantly, stilbite subgroup.

Description: Generally small (<5mm) crystals in fractures.

Description: "This anhedral sapphire was found on Interstate 84 west in Newtown, Connecticut. The specimen is bluish-black in color and embedded in kyanite. As far as the author is aware very few specimens were ever collected.", Januzzi (1994). A specimen fitting this description is on display at the Connecticut Mining and Mineral museum in Kent, Conn. The label says Currituck Road, Newtown. There are large roadcuts at the intersection of I-84 and the Currituck Road overpass. Corundum grains are up to a couple of cm.

Habit: parallel-growth aggregates of tapered crystals
Colour: colorless
Description: Mostly micro crystals with pearly luster. Species based on multiple EDS analyses of heulandites from all over Connecticut, which are all heulandite-Ca.
