The Upper Miocene age Cabo de Gata volcanic complex is the largest volcanic manifestation in SE Spain. It continues to expand beneath the Alboran Sea and has been brought into its present position by the operation of the Carboneras-Serrata Fault. The greater part of volcanism in the Alboran basin is submerged. Volcanic structures of Cabo de Gata have signs of having been generated, by and large, beneath the sea. Some of the oldest volcanic structures could grow enough to reach the surface, forming islands of volcanic origin fringed by marine sedimentary platforms.
