The name is derived from its composition.
Dimorph of:
As inclusions in corundum xenocrysts. May be treated as the Zr analogue of rutile, cassiterite, argutite, paratellurite, plattnerite, pyrolusite, and tripuhyite, although not isostructural (different space group).

Ziroite is a tetragonal polymorph of baddeleyite (monoclinic ZrO2). Synthetic ZrO2 with the P42/nmc zirconia (HT)-type structure is well known.
