Named in honor of Sergei Sergeevich Smirnov (Серге́й Серге́евич Смирно́в) (2(14) September 1895, Ivanovo-Voznesensk, Vladimir province, Russian Empire - 20 August 1947, Leningrad, USSR), famous Soviet geologist, academician, and a renowned specialist in the mineralogy of ore deposits. The Dorsa Smirnov ridge on the Moon was also named after him.
Dimorph of:
The Mg analogue of hopeite (Zn-dominant) and nizamoffite (Mn2+-dominant).

Crystal structure details:

* [Zn(PO4)]– layers connected via interstitial [MO2(H2O)4]2– octahedra, where M = Mg2+;
* the layers || (010) plane;
* layer-forming ZnO4 corner-sharing tetrahedra chains along [001]

The sergeysmirnovite-reaphookhillite relation is the same as the hopeite-parahopeite one; the structure of sergeysmirnovite and hopeite is more complex (including topological differences) than that of the two other species listed.
