Hauzenberg is a municipality in the district of Passau, in Bavaria, Germany. It is situated 15 kilometres (ca. 9 miles) northeast of Passau.
Hauzenberger Graphit is a graphite deposit near Hauzenberg, Kropfmühl district, where carbon with a hexagonal layer lattice structure and a density of 2.25 has been mined for more than a century. It is the only graphite deposit in Germany, but its quality is not the same as Ceylon graphite.
The first graphite mines emerged at the beginning of the 18th century. Graphite was obtained through landowner mining, so that in times when sales were good, the landowners gained considerable wealth.
Originally, the mined material was only processed around Passau, especially in Obernzell, as an addition to classic clay crucibles (“Hessian crucibles”) and was referred to and marketed as “Passau crucibles”. The technique of adding graphite to the Hessian crucibles was soon adopted by the crucible manufacturers in Hesse (Grossalmerode district) and also crucible manufacturers in Neheim-Hüsten in North Rhine-Westphalia, who had much larger capacities and clay reserves. Since then, it has been considered the basic mixture for all clay-graphite crucibles, also manufactured in England (Morgan) and the USA (Vesuvius).
Titanite was discovered for the first time in the Hauzenberg graphite mines in 1795. The location is therefore also considered to be its type locality. Other mineral finds at this site include feldspar, mica, hornblende, quartz, and talc.
