Kropfmühl is a place in the Germannsdorf district and belongs to the town of Hauzenberg in the Passau district. Kropfmühl is 25 km from Passau and 5 km from Hauzenberg.
Graphite (Hauzenberger graphite) has been mined in Kropfmühl since 1870, with one interruption. Funding was stopped in 2005. However, the mine was maintained in such a condition that, according to the operator, graphite production could be resumed within six months if the world market price rose to such an extent that operations were profitable again.
In the summer of 2012, graphite mining was resumed after seven years. In 2008 Advanced Metallurgical Group N.V. (Amsterdam) took over the majority of what was then Graphit Kropfmühl AG, and the company was completely taken over in 2012.
The graphite mine is also open to visitors. The company produces silicon and graphite. Silicon is used in the chemical, aluminium, semiconductor and solar cell industries. Graphites are, among other things, used in lubricants, as carbon brushes in electric motors and in the chemical industry, for example for thermal insulation and energy saving programs.
