Pequannock; Cupheag
Stratford is a town founded by European settlers in 1639 as Pequannock and then as Cupheag in 1640. It became known as Stratford in 1643 to honor William Shakespeare's birthplace in England. Stratford was one of the two principal settlements in southwestern Connecticut, the other being Fairfield. Over time it gave rise to several new towns that broke off and incorporated separately. This is important relative to the proper localities of late 18th to early 19th century mineral finds and their documentation. The following towns were created from parts of Stratford:
Shelton (originally Ripton) in 1789. In 1789 Ripton Parish separated from Stratford and became the Town of Huntington.
Monroe created from Huntington in 1823.
Nichols (originally Unity in 1725, then North Stratford in 1744).
Long Hill, (merged with Unity to form North Stratford in 1744).
Trumbull, North Stratford separated from Stratford and became the town of Trumbull in 1797.
Bridgeport (also partly from Fairfield) in 1821.

Formula: REE3+2(CO3)3 · 8H2O Habit: rectangular, blocky Colour: colorless Description: A single microcrystal specimen from the Bill Henderson micromount collection is held by the Yale Peabody Museum. Harold Moritz examined it on October 16, 2025. It consists of a 1mm cluster of very clear, pearly, colorless crystals sandwiched between some yellow mica in the typical Alpine-type clefts at this locality. The crystals appear rectangular and blocky (apparently orthorhombic) with some striations parallel to their long axes.
Some kind of analysis was apparently done because a label on the micromount box reads:
