Salisbury is a town in the northwest corner of Connecticut settled and incorporated in 1741. It includes the communities of Lakeville, Amesville, Lime Rock, Salisbury, and Taconic (formerly Chapinville). Historically the areas of Joyceville, Ore Hill, Hammertown, Weatogue and Twin Lakes were recognized as separate communities but are no longer.
Salisbury is underlain by complex metamorphic geology with low mountains underlain by Taconian klippes of Cambrian Everett Schist and lowlands underlain mostly by intensely folded and thrust-faulted Cambrian-Ordovician Stockbridge Marble and Ordovician Walloomsac schist and marble. The town is host to several former goethite iron ore mines (Salisbury Mining District) that formed from deep weathering along the Stockbridge/Walloomsac contact including the large Ore Hill Mine. It lent its name to the Salisbury District comprising the group of similar iron mines in nearby Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York.

In Januzzi (1994) the discoverer states, "Recent examination, by way of x-ray and semi-quantitative analysis uncovered a new species for the Scoville Ore Bed in Salisbury, Connecticut; the mineral churchite, a relatively inconspicuous species and confused (no doubt often) with rhabdophane and probably more common than realized. Florencite should be looked for when churchite occurs in a deposit of this type. A hyalite-like mineral evidently forming before churchite lies just beneath it (the specimen is in the author’s collection)-this species is very possibly evansite." |
