Chapin Mine


A goethite mine also rich in manganese. Pumpelly (1886) reports that it was opened in 1806 and supplied the old Chapin forge. It was reopened in 1879 and supplied 140 tons during the census year. The ore lies between marble and schist exposed in a pit that then was 50 feet deep and accessed via a 600-foot-long adit.

More details from Hobbs (1907):

This mine, located about two and a half miles northwest from Chapinville, was some fifty years ago a very productive iron mine, and twenty years later was reopened for manganese. The ore body laid as a wedge-shaped mass upon a foot wall of dolomite, which by Mr. William Pettee, formerly consulting engineer of the Barnum Richardson Co., was estimated to dip 30 degrees to the west. The ore body also met the same kind of rock upon a nearly vertical plane which formed the west wall, a wall still exposed at the mine
