Köppen climate type:
Collingwood is a small coastal town, with about 235 people, along the north-west coastline of the South Island. Booked out during summer school holidays, and at other times you will have the area to yourself in this out of the way place.
It is the last town of substance before Farewell Spit, popular with bird watchers. It is near the northern terminus of the Heaphy Track, and can be used as a base to access the Kahurangi National park. The Te Anaroa Caves can be toured during the summer months.
The Aorere Goldfield is just south of Rockville, about 20 kilometres south of Collingwood, and a walking track can be taken to see what remains, with a couple of caves thrown in as well. Minor relics of the Puponga coal mine is near Farewell Spit. Tourmaline, sapphire, and kyanite, some crystals, can be found near Richmond Hill, Richmond Flat, the Parapara inlet and river, and the Onekaka River.
