In the past, Stahlberg was one of the most important mercury mining districts in the Palatinate. Stahlberg is the name for a hill as well as for a village located on the northern part of the hill which was the former miners' residential area.

According to von Dechen (1848) mining activities started in 1410 with the exploitation of silver-rich fahlore for silver production. Based on findings of ceramic artefacts Walling (2005) states that mining started even earlier, at the end of the 13th or the beginning of the 14th century. After several ups and downs in the following centuries, the mines were at last worked between 1934 and 1942.

The district is divided into two parts: a northern part called Vorderer Stahlberg (fore Stahlberg) which encompasses mainly the village Stahlberg and a southern part called Hinterer Stahlberg (rear Stahlberg) which are separated by a large (extending about 800 m) unproductive zone. The Roßwald area north to Stahlberg is a closely related but separate area (see Roßwald mine) and at the southern foot of Stahlberg close to the village of Katzenbach the Steinkreuz mine and a few smaller mines were active.

Erzengel Michael, St. Philipp and Bergmannsherz were the mines working the Vordere Stahlberg. Prinz Friedrich (Graf Friedrich), Frischer Mut (Frischemuth), St. Peter and Gottes Gabe (Gottesgabe) were working the Hinterer Stahlberg. Most parts of the Vorderer Stahlberg mines are covered by buildings and gardens of Stahlberg village and not accessible any more. The upper part of Erzengel and St. Philipp mines called Königsstuhl was worked by an open cast mine during the last period and is still accessible today.
