Stjernøya Island is divided administratively between 2 municipalities (kommuner): Alta and Hasvik municipalities.

The island built principally of gabbroic and ultrabasic intrusions, but there are 3 younger occurrences of alkaline igneous rocks, in 2 of which carbonatites also occur.
