Mt Shasta Mine

An iron mine located behind Mt. Shasta Restaurant. Discovered by Jacob Houghton during the course of surveying for a proposed rail extension. The mine was operated via seven shafts--numbered from east to west. While the original discovery seemed promising, the ore frequently pinched and faulted and was not easy to follow. It is famous for its green to almost black chamosite pseudomorphs after almandine crystals that were frequently encountered during the course of mining. Later, these were readily available on the extensive dumps. The locals would collect these and sell them as "black diamonds" on the trains that stopped at the Michigamme railroad depot.

Note: The name "Mt. Shasta mine" should be avoided, as this was merely a name given to instruct would-be collectors to look for the adjacent Mt. Shasta Restaurant.
