A summit located SSE of Hicks.
In the southern midcontinent of North America (Illinois, USA), Hicks Dome hosts REE+HFSE and fluorite in mineralized breccias and lamprophyres. Enrichment of REE+HFSE and fluorite is thought to be associated with Permian emplacement of alkaline ultramafic lamprophyre dikes (Ar/Ar and K-Ar ages ca. 271 Ma) triggered by reactivation of the Reelfoot Rift-Rough Creek Graben at the onset of the breakup of Pangea. Lamprophyres at Hicks Dome are LREE-dominant, and it has been hypothesized that a deep-level carbonatite magma contributed to the formation of critical minerals. Carbonatitic rocks have been reported in the Hicks Dome area based on their REE content, though few analyzed samples contain >1 wt% total rare earth oxides (TREO), silica contents of dikes are higher than typical carbonatites (20–26 wt% SiO2), and isotopic compositions of LREE-mineralized samples are unknown. While aeromagnetic surveys show no evidence for a larger magmatic body at depth, a seismic survey indicates that doming extends into Proterozoic basement suggesting intrusive and explosive activity originated in the basement (Potter et al., 1995). In contrast to LREE-dominant lamprophyres, the main critical mineral resource at Hicks Dome is a mineralogically complex breccia (the Host Breccia) that is enriched in middle- and high-atomic-number lanthanides (Eu–Lu) plus Y (grouped herein as HREE), Ti, Nb, Th, F, P, Be, Pb, Zn, Sr, and Ba.
The dominant structural feature of the Illinois portion of the IKFD is Hicks Dome, an elliptical to nearly circular uplift approximately 10 miles in diameter in western Hardin County and northeastern Pope County. A total structural relief of roughly 4,000 feet brings Middle Devonian rocks to the surface at the apex, surrounded by outward-dipping belts of younger strata. Igneous diatremes are scattered throughout the region, and nearly vertical dike-like intrusive breccia bodies radiate from the center of Hicks Dome. Most geologists concur with Bradbury and Baxter (1992) that the dome is the product of large scale igneous intrusion and brecciation at depth.
