Named in honor of Dr. Evgeniy Grigor'evich Proshchenko (1929-1996), Russian mineralogist, who found the mineral. It was first described in 1966 as a REE-bearing fluorosilicate without a name, but first characterized as a new species by Raade et al. (2009)
