Name:
Named by W. Brögger in 1884 in honor of Diderik Cappelen (21 July 1856, Furustul i Holla (now Nome), Telemark, Norway - 7 May 1935, Oslo, Norway), an ironwork owner, chamberlain, and mineralogist from Ulefoss who found the mineral. The suffix was added in 1987 to denote the dominant rare-earth-element.
