Golding-Keen quarry; Goulding-Keene quarry


A giant alkaline pegmatite.

This quarry is the source of the rocks found at the CN Rock Dump in central Bancroft, located inside Egan Chutes Provincial Park.

The Golding-Keene Quarry was worked for nepheline from 1927 to 1939 by New England Nepheline Company, the quarry which is 25 meters long, 18 wide, with a 12 meter face, was cut into east side of a hill of the west bank of the York River.

Collecting at the Golding-Keene Quarry is now prohibited as it is part of the Egan Chutes Ontario Park. Collecting is still permitted at the CN Dump in central Bancroft, where material from this quarry has been deposited.

The primary reference given for the locality (Sabina 1986) spells the name Golding-Keen, so the primary name has been changed, but some references use the spelling Goulding-Keene. First reference to the name of the company seems to be in the Trenton Evening Times, March 25 1922, p. 13, where it is stated that "Charles E. Golding ... will assume direction of a new corporation to be known as the Golding-Keene Company with a feldspar pulverizing mill at Keene, N. H."
